- Elanco gains global access to Syngulon’s bacteriocin-based microbial selection platform
- Technology supports antibiotic-free, more sustainable fermentation processes
- Improves stability and efficiency in producing recombinant proteins and plasmid DNA
- Non-exclusive deal validates Syngulon’s platform and expands its commercial reach
- Partnership aligns with growing industry focus on innovative, responsible biotech solutions
Syngulon SRL and Elanco Animal Health Incorporated have entered into a licensing agreement granting Elanco worldwide rights to Syngulon’s proprietary bacteriocin-based microbial selection technologies. The platform will be used in the development and manufacturing of animal health products.
The technology is designed to improve microbial stability and efficiency in industrial fermentation, a critical process for producing biologics such as recombinant proteins and plasmid DNA. By enabling antibiotic-free selection systems, the platform also supports more sustainable and regulatory-friendly biomanufacturing approaches.
Advancing Antibiotic-Free Fermentation
Syngulon’s technology leverages bacteriocins—naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides—to maintain selective pressure in microbial systems without relying on traditional antibiotics. This approach addresses increasing regulatory and industry pressure to reduce antibiotic use in production environments.
Guy Hélin, CEO of Syngulon, said the agreement underscores the strength of the company’s platform and its mission to deliver sustainable innovation. He noted that partnering with a global animal health leader like Elanco will help broaden adoption of antibiotic-free fermentation technologies.
Supporting Elanco’s Innovation Strategy
Elanco highlighted the collaboration as part of its broader commitment to science-driven innovation in animal health. The company aims to leverage the licensed technology to enhance its R&D and manufacturing capabilities while addressing unmet customer needs.
Mayur Patel, Vice President of Global R&D at Elanco, emphasized that the bacteriocin-based system represents a meaningful advancement in microbial fermentation and aligns with Elanco’s focus on delivering impactful, next-generation solutions.
Shared Focus on Responsible Biotechnology
Both companies pointed to a shared commitment to innovation, sustainability, and responsible use of biotechnology. The agreement reflects a broader industry shift toward more efficient, antibiotic-free production methods in animal health.
