New Hill’s Prescription Diet formulations combine kidney support with dermatologic and gastrointestinal nutrition, addressing a longstanding challenge for veterinarians managing complex canine and feline patients.

  • Hill’s introduces Prescription Diet k/d + Derm Complete for dogs and k/d + z/d Hydrolyzed for cats.
  • New diets are formulated for pets with kidney disease alongside skin or gastrointestinal sensitivities.
  • Both products feature ActivBiome+ Kidney Defense, a prebiotic fiber blend designed to support the gut microbiome and reduce harmful waste products.
  • Available in both dry and wet formulations through veterinary recommendation.
  • Hill’s says the products represent the only wet therapeutic nutrition options in North America that combine kidney and sensitivity support among leading veterinary brands.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition has expanded its therapeutic nutrition portfolio with the launch of two new veterinary-exclusive diets designed to support pets managing chronic kidney disease alongside food-related skin or gastrointestinal sensitivities.

The company announced the availability of Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d + Derm Complete for dogs and Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d + z/d Hydrolyzed for cats, both formulated to address multiple health conditions through a single nutritional solution.

Addressing Multiple Clinical Needs

According to Hill’s, veterinary teams frequently encounter patients whose medical conditions span multiple categories, creating challenges when selecting an appropriate therapeutic diet.

“Veterinary health care teams often see patients whose health needs don’t fit neatly into one category,” said Dr. Chelsie Estey, US Chief Veterinary Officer at Hill’s. “Historically, veterinarians have had limited nutritional options to support both kidney health and sensitivities.”

The new formulations are designed to help clinicians manage kidney function while also addressing adverse food reactions, digestive sensitivities, or dermatologic concerns without requiring nutritional compromises.

Gut Microbiome Support

Both diets incorporate ActivBiome+ Kidney Defense, a proprietary blend of prebiotic fibers developed to activate the gut microbiome and help reduce harmful waste products associated with compromised kidney function.

The formulations also contain reduced phosphorus and sodium levels, omega-3 fatty acids, and optimized amounts of essential amino acids and high-quality protein intended to help maintain muscle mass, energy, and overall strength.

Product-Specific Benefits

For canine patients, Prescription Diet k/d + Derm Complete is formulated to support kidney function while promoting skin health and digestive wellness. Hill’s says the diet can deliver visible skin improvement within 21 days in dogs with food sensitivities and utilizes a single novel animal protein source to help minimize adverse food reactions.

For feline patients, Prescription Diet k/d + z/d Hydrolyzed features highly hydrolyzed proteins designed to avoid immune system recognition, helping reduce digestive and dermatologic signs associated with food sensitivities while supporting kidney health.

Supporting Pet Owners Through Diagnosis

Carrick Massey, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Hill’s US, said the new products were developed to simplify nutritional management for pet owners whose animals require support for multiple conditions.

“When that same pet receives a veterinarian’s diagnosis of kidney issues, pet parents may feel like they need to start over,” Massey said. “That’s why we created the Prescription Diet k/d + sensitivities nutrition—so veterinarians and pet parents can confidently make the switch.”

The new diets are available through veterinarian recommendation in both wet and dry formulations for dogs and cats.
