New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced nearly $10 million in funding for animal shelters and humane organizations through the latest round of the state’s Companion Animal Capital Projects Fund.
The grants will support construction, renovation, and infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing animal care and increasing adoption readiness for sheltered dogs and cats across the state.
Projects funded this year include kennel renovations, upgraded HVAC systems, expanded medical facilities, sanitation improvements, and new shelter construction. Several organizations received the program’s maximum $500,000 award, including the Chautauqua County Humane Society, Jefferson County SPCA, and Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter.
According to the state, more than $48 million has been invested in 150 shelter projects since the program launched in 2017. An additional $1 million in this funding round was reserved for shelters operating outside municipal contracts in underserved regions.
“Pets are family,” Hochul said in the announcement. “This funding awarded today is going to make a real difference, helping to better equip these vital facilities with the tools they need to keep our furry friends safe and well cared for as they wait to meet their new families.”
