The LoRa Alliance says LoRaWAN is emerging as a practical solution for extending Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity into areas where cellular and Wi-Fi networks are limited or unavailable.
The organization announced that LoRaWAN has become a preferred connectivity platform for smart agriculture because of its long-range coverage, low power requirements and ability to operate in remote environments using unlicensed spectrum.
For companies serving the livestock sector, the technology could support a growing ecosystem of connected animal health devices, environmental sensors and operational management tools designed for extensive production systems.
Implications for Precision Livestock Management
Among the livestock-focused examples highlighted by the alliance is an Australian deployment by MooField, which uses lightweight solar-powered GPS ear tags connected through LoRaWAN gateways to provide real-time cattle location across large grazing properties.
According to the alliance, the system enables producers to monitor herd movements without relying on mains power or conventional cellular infrastructure. The company is also evaluating satellite backhaul to extend connectivity into even more remote grazing areas.
The alliance notes that the same network infrastructure can support multiple agricultural applications simultaneously, including livestock monitoring, water trough management, fence and equipment security, weather stations and environmental sensors.
For animal health manufacturers, the ability to operate multiple connected systems on a single network could reduce deployment costs while creating opportunities for expanded digital health offerings.
Growing Ecosystem for Agricultural IoT
The LoRa Alliance reports that its ecosystem now includes more than 650 certified devices from over 330 member companies, with more than 125 million LoRaWAN-connected devices deployed worldwide by the end of 2025.
Beyond livestock production, the technology is being used to support precision irrigation, disease detection in crops, soil monitoring and water management, demonstrating the broader expansion of digital agriculture infrastructure.
As remote monitoring becomes increasingly integrated into livestock production, connectivity platforms capable of supporting wearable sensors, health monitoring devices and environmental data collection may become an increasingly important component of precision animal health strategies.
