The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) has released a new report aimed at helping animal health, housing and animal welfare stakeholders expand access to pet-inclusive rental housing.
The Pet-Inclusive Housing Report grew out of HABRI’s Spring Policy Forum, which brought together experts in housing policy, research, animal welfare, pet care, animal health and human social services. The report outlines potential approaches to reducing housing barriers for pet owners, including greater transparency around pet policies in leases, pet deposit assistance programs and reducing breed and weight restrictions.
The report also highlights the formation of the Pets and Families Housing Coalition, a group organized to support evidence-based approaches to expanding pet-inclusive housing at the local, state and federal levels.
HABRI said the report is intended to provide advocates and other stakeholders with research, policy examples and resources they can use in efforts to increase the availability and accessibility of pet-inclusive housing.
