The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) has opened nominations for its 2026 Veterinary Technician of the Year Award, which recognizes a credentialed veterinary technician whose work demonstrates professional excellence and helps advance the veterinary technology profession.
The award is intended to honor an individual whose contributions elevate veterinary technology, positively affect veterinary medicine and inspire others in the profession.
Award criteria
Nominees will be evaluated on several areas of professional achievement. NAVTA is asking nominators to provide specific examples demonstrating how candidates have contributed to exceptional clinical practice, patient care or veterinary medicine more broadly.
The criteria also consider leadership, advocacy and mentorship, as well as contributions to education, public outreach and engagement within the veterinary or broader community.
Innovation is another component of the evaluation, including new ideas, research, programs or improved practices that advance veterinary technology. Nominees are also expected to demonstrate ethical conduct, professionalism and integrity.
Who can submit a nomination
Nominations may be submitted by NAVTA members, licensed veterinarians, credentialed veterinary technicians, employers, supervisors, colleagues and educators associated with AVMA-accredited veterinary technology programs. Self-nominations are not accepted.
NAVTA, which represents more than 9,000 members, will provide the award recipient with a complimentary year of membership in addition to the professional recognition associated with the honor.
Nomination requirements
A complete nomination packet must include the nomination form with contact information for the nominee and nominator, along with a one- to two-page letter outlining the nominee’s qualifications, accomplishments and impact.
Nominators must also provide two letters of support from individuals familiar with the nominee’s professional contributions and a curriculum vitae or résumé highlighting the nominee’s experience, leadership and contributions.
Optional supporting materials may include publications, presentations, documentation of community outreach, awards or other evidence demonstrating the nominee’s impact.
NAVTA said incomplete nomination packets will not be considered. Submission also serves as the nominator’s attestation that the materials accurately and truthfully represent the nominee’s accomplishments and appropriately acknowledge authorship and sources when applicable.
