The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Amodip (amlodipine besylate chewable tablets) for the control of systemic hypertension in cats, marking the first veterinary-specific amlodipine product available for this indication.
Systemic hypertension is most commonly associated with chronic kidney disease in cats but may also occur idiopathically or alongside other chronic conditions. If left untreated, the condition can lead to damage of the eyes, kidneys, heart, and central nervous system.
Amlodipine, the active ingredient in Amodip, is a calcium channel blocker that lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels and reducing cardiac workload.
The product is administered once daily, with an initial dosing period of 14 days. If clinical response is inadequate, veterinarians may increase the dose based on label guidance. Cats weighing less than 2.5 kg cannot be accurately dosed with the product.
Veterinarians are advised to monitor blood pressure regularly and assess kidney and liver parameters early in treatment. Pet owners should watch for adverse effects such as decreased appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea.
