Purina Pro Plan Veterinary has launched a nationwide campaign encouraging pet owners to recognize and thank veterinarians in honor of World Veterinary Day, while also supporting programs aimed at addressing challenges within the profession.

The initiative invites pet owners to submit messages of appreciation through an online platform, with submissions open through May 31, 2026. For each message received, the company will donate $1—up to a total of $50,000—to nonprofit organizations supporting veterinary professionals.

Addressing gaps in recognition

The campaign comes amid a disconnect between public perception and professional sentiment within veterinary medicine. While the vast majority of pet owners report appreciating veterinarians, fewer than half of veterinary professionals feel adequately recognized for their work.

The effort aims to bridge that gap by making it easier for clients to express gratitude, whether through written notes, drawings, or other messages.

Supporting veterinary wellbeing

Beyond recognition, the campaign highlights broader industry challenges, including high rates of burnout and emotional strain. Research indicates that a significant proportion of veterinarians experience moderate to high burnout, with elevated levels of exhaustion compared to the general population.

Through its Pro Plan Veterinary Support Mission, Purina has committed funding to initiatives addressing mental health, financial barriers to care, and access to specialized services. Since its launch in 2024, the program has contributed more than $3.5 million to partner organizations.

Encouraging year-round engagement

In addition to submitting messages, participants can nominate veterinary clinics for a chance to receive a $10,000 donation. The campaign underscores the importance of ongoing support for veterinarians beyond World Veterinary Day.

Industry leaders involved in the initiative emphasize that veterinary medicine is more than a profession—it is a lifelong commitment that requires both technical expertise and emotional resilience.

Expanding awareness of veterinary challenges

By combining public engagement with financial support, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the pressures facing veterinary teams while reinforcing the value they provide to pet owners and communities.

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary said the initiative reflects its broader commitment to supporting veterinarians both professionally and personally.
