FDA Approves New PREVICOX Tablet Design to Expand Dosing Options for Dogs

Boehringer Ingelheim has introduced an FDA-approved, quarterable Snap-Tab design for PREVICOX (firocoxib) chewable tablets, allowing veterinarians to tailor dosing more precisely for dogs weighing as little as seven pounds. The redesigned tablets also offer storage and packaging improvements intended to reduce product waste.

  • The FDA has approved a new quarterable Snap-Tab design for PREVICOX (firocoxib) chewable tablets, expanding dosing flexibility for dogs.
  • Double-scored tablets can be divided into quarters, providing additional dosing options using the existing 57 mg and 227 mg strengths.
  • The new design allows veterinarians to prescribe PREVICOX for dogs weighing as little as seven pounds, according to Boehringer Ingelheim.
  • Divided tablets may be stored in their original container for up to one month, potentially reducing unused medication and waste.
  • The redesigned tablets and packaging will be introduced gradually throughout 2026 and 2027, beginning with 60-count bottles of both strengths.

Boehringer Ingelheim has announced the U.S. availability of a redesigned PREVICOX (firocoxib) chewable tablet featuring a quarterable Snap-Tab configuration, following approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The new design incorporates double scoring that allows tablets to be divided into four portions, providing veterinarians with additional options for tailoring doses to a dog’s body weight.

According to the company, the change expands dosing flexibility for dogs weighing as little as seven pounds while maintaining the existing PREVICOX formulation and full-tablet strengths.

Expanded Dosing Flexibility for Canine Pain Management

PREVICOX is a cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) approved for controlling pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in dogs. It is also approved for controlling postoperative pain and inflammation following soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery.

The new Snap-Tab design applies to both the 57 mg and 227 mg chewable tablet strengths.

By allowing tablets to be divided into quarters, the updated configuration provides additional dosing increments without introducing new full-tablet strengths.

“This new tablet design provides a number of benefits to veterinarians and dog owners, with the ability to more easily tailor dosing that can improve outcomes and ultimately enhance quality of life for more dogs,” said Dr. Russ Drury, executive director of Veterinary Professional Services at Boehringer Ingelheim.

The company says the revised design is intended to improve convenience and dosing precision while offering more flexibility for veterinarians prescribing treatment based on individual patient weight.

Tablet Storage and Packaging Changes

Alongside the new scoring configuration, Boehringer Ingelheim has introduced changes intended to improve storage convenience and reduce packaging waste.

Once divided, PREVICOX tablets may be stored in their original container for up to one month, allowing unused portions to be retained for subsequent administration within that period.

The company is also transitioning PREVICOX to a taller, industry-standard round bottle and eliminating the cotton previously included in the packaging.

According to Boehringer Ingelheim, these changes are intended to reduce material use, improve packaging efficiency and simplify supply requirements throughout the product lifecycle.

Several product characteristics will remain unchanged, including the active formulation, 57 mg and 227 mg full-tablet strengths, bottle counts, push-and-turn closure system and child-resistant, senior-friendly packaging features.

Phased Introduction Through 2027

Boehringer Ingelheim plans to introduce the redesigned PREVICOX tablets and packaging progressively throughout 2026 and 2027.

The initial rollout will include the 227 mg and 57 mg formulations in 60-count bottles, with additional presentations transitioning to the new design over time.

The update represents a modification to the tablet’s physical design and packaging rather than a change to its active ingredient or approved therapeutic indications.

PREVICOX remains a prescription NSAID for veterinary use in dogs. As with other medications in this class, veterinarians should follow approved labeling when determining appropriate dosing and monitoring patients for potential adverse effects.
