- USDA CVB granted conditional licensure to BiomEdit’s CPerf LLV based on a reasonable expectation of efficacy in reducing necrotic enteritis-associated mortality in broiler chickens challenged with Clostridium perfringens.
- BiomEdit will continue advancing CPerf LLV toward full licensure.
- CPerf LLV is expected to assume the brand name Optavant upon full licensure.
- A pivotal efficacy study reviewed by USDA CVB demonstrated a 48.7% reduction in necrotic enteritis-associated mortality.
- BiomEdit has started commercial evaluation programs with three major U.S. poultry producers involving more than 35 million broilers.
- The USDA conditional license is held by Diamond Animal Health, BiomEdit’s contract development and manufacturing partner.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Center for Veterinary Biologics (USDA CVB) has granted conditional licensure to BiomEdit’s Clostridium Perfringens Alpha Toxin and NetB Antibody Fragment, Live Limosilactobacillus Vector (CPerf LLV), previously referred to as BE-101.
The conditional license is based on demonstration of a reasonable expectation of efficacy in reducing necrotic enteritis-associated mortality in broiler chickens challenged with Clostridium perfringens.
USDA conditional licensure allows earlier market access for products demonstrating safety and a reasonable expectation of efficacy while additional data are generated for full licensure. BiomEdit said it will continue advancing CPerf LLV toward full licensure.
BiomEdit believes CPerf LLV is the first genetically engineered probiotic biologic licensed for use in any animal species worldwide. The company describes the technology as part of a new class of Programmable Veterinary Biologics.
Targeting necrotic enteritis
CPerf LLV, which is expected to assume the brand name Optavant upon full licensure, is engineered against Clostridium perfringens toxins associated with necrotic enteritis-related disease, mortality and productivity losses.
The non-antibiotic approach is designed to provide poultry producers with another option for necrotic enteritis beyond antibiotics.
“USDA conditional licensure of CPerf LLV is a defining moment for BiomEdit and for animal health,” said Aaron Schacht, CEO of BiomEdit. “In just over four years since our founding, we have advanced from an ambitious scientific vision to a conditionally licensed product ready for the market.”
Commercial evaluation begins
BiomEdit has initiated a commercial evaluation program with three major U.S. poultry producers. CPerf LLV is expected to be deployed in more than 35 million broilers, allowing producers to evaluate the biologic within their production systems.
BiomEdit’s pivotal efficacy study, reviewed by USDA CVB, demonstrated a 48.7% reduction in necrotic enteritis-associated mortality in broiler chickens. Mortality declined from 13.1% among challenged controls to 6.6% among birds receiving CPerf LLV.
Separately, results published in npj Biofilms and Microbiomes demonstrated that, in a controlled study of subclinical necrotic enteritis, probiotic-delivered nanobodies targeting alpha toxin and NetB improved broiler weight gain and feed conversion, outperforming prophylactic antibiotics and the parent probiotic strains. BiomEdit noted that the published study data were not reviewed by USDA as part of the conditional licensure process.
“These evaluation trials give producers the opportunity to see how CPerf LLV performs in their systems, which is especially important for a novel biologic technology,” said Andrew Carlson, chief commercial officer at BiomEdit.
Diamond Animal Health holds conditional license
The USDA conditional license is held by Diamond Animal Health, BiomEdit’s contract development and manufacturing partner.
“Commercializing a first-of-its-kind biologic requires close collaboration and operational excellence,” said Dean Warras, CEO of Diamond Animal Health. “We’re proud to partner with BiomEdit as they bring this important innovation to poultry producers and help establish the future of advanced veterinary biologics.”
BiomEdit also acquired Folium Science’s technology platform and pipeline assets in August, including BiomElix One, a poultry feed ingredient approved in Brazil, and Guided Biotics CRISPR-Cas technology.
The company has also initiated its Series C financing round. BiomEdit said proceeds will support the commercial launch and path to full licensure for CPerf LLV, pipeline programs and development of its Programmable Veterinary Biologics platform.
CPerf LLV’s label states that the product has shown a reasonable expectation of efficacy for passive immunity of healthy chicks against Clostridium perfringens. Duration of passive immunity has not been determined, and efficacy and potency have not been fully demonstrated under the conditional license.
