Revival Animal Health is voluntarily recalling multiple lots of two feline milk replacer brands because of inconsistent levels of vitamins and trace minerals that could pose serious health risks to kittens.
The recall covers certain lots of Breeder’s Edge Foster Care Feline Milk Replacer and Shelter’s Choice Feline Milk Replacer sold nationwide online and through retail pet stores. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration posted the company’s recall announcement Aug. 26.
According to the announcement, testing identified low levels of potassium, copper, folic acid, choline and/or pyridoxine, also known as vitamin B6.
The company said no illnesses associated with the products have been confirmed. However, Revival is investigating nine complaints involving potential gastrointestinal and bone development issues.
Nutrient deficiencies pose heightened risk to kittens
The recall announcement cautions that neonatal kittens are particularly vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies because of their rapid growth, immature organ systems and reliance on milk as their complete source of nutrition.
Deficiencies involving the nutrients identified in the recalled products could contribute to anemia, neurological problems, liver or kidney damage, skeletal disease and cardiac complications, according to the announcement. Signs could develop within days to several weeks.
Owners whose kittens consumed an affected product and are displaying clinical signs should contact their veterinarian.
Products included in the recall
Affected Shelter’s Choice Feline Milk Replacer products include 1-pound, 3.5-pound and 8-pound packages with specified best-by dates ranging from September 2026 through March 2028.
Affected Breeder’s Edge Foster Care Feline Milk Replacer products include 12-ounce, 4.5-pound and 18-pound packages with specified best-by dates extending through March 2028.
Because the recall applies to specific UPCs and best-by dates, consumers should check their packages against the complete FDA recall notice before using the products.
Testing leads to voluntary recall
Revival initiated additional testing after receiving third-party results indicating a possible nutrient deficiency in one lot of feline milk replacer.
The company subsequently tested multiple lots, with results reviewed by an independent animal nutritionist Aug. 12. Revival attributed the nutrient deficiencies to inconsistencies involving a third-party manufacturer and said it has since discontinued its relationship with that manufacturer.
Consumers with recalled products should stop feeding them immediately and contact Revival Animal Health to arrange a return and full refund. The company can be reached at 1-877-870-4059 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDT Monday through Friday.
