Trupanion has updated its free veterinary education program with additional tools intended to help hospital teams navigate conversations about the cost of veterinary care and pet medical insurance.
The enhanced Trupanion Certification course is available on demand to veterinary professionals throughout North America. Originally introduced in 2023, the program focuses on helping veterinary teams discuss financial preparedness with pet owners before an unexpected illness or injury occurs.
According to Trupanion, more than 33,800 veterinary professionals representing over 5,289 hospitals have completed the program.
“Access to care doesn’t begin when a pet becomes sick or injured—it begins with proactive conversations that help pet parents prepare before the unexpected happens,” MJ Hewitt, senior vice president at Trupanion, said in the announcement.
Hewitt said veterinary professionals can play an important role in those conversations and that the company is continuing to invest in educational resources aimed at improving staff confidence and client communication.
Updated training focuses on real-world conversations
The original certification course introduced veterinary hospital teams to pet insurance concepts and provided guidance for discussing the cost of care with clients. The refreshed program expands that approach by addressing both how pet insurance works and why conversations about financial preparedness can affect veterinary treatment decisions.
Training is tailored to different roles within a veterinary hospital, including veterinarians, veterinary technicians, client service representatives and hospital leaders.
The course also incorporates interactive scenarios based on common veterinary experiences, reflection prompts and engagement-based learning. Practical guidance is designed to connect routine client interactions with broader discussions about financial preparedness and access to veterinary care.
Additional education addresses the purpose and potential value of pet medical insurance, including differences between Trupanion’s direct payment approach and traditional reimbursement-based insurance models.
Hospitals report changes in communication and workflow
Veterinary hospitals participating in the program reported benefits ranging from greater confidence discussing insurance to improvements in administrative workflows.
Aspetuck Animal Hospital in New Preston, Connecticut, said the certification program has helped its team educate clients about preparing financially for veterinary care.
Weste Animal Hospital in Nova Scotia reported that the program has helped streamline processes for staff and clients, allowing the hospital team to spend less time on paperwork and more time focused on patient care.
Uniacke Lakes Animal Hospital, also in Nova Scotia, said the program has increased staff confidence when discussing pet insurance and helped create more consistent messaging across the hospital. The practice also reported that increased insurance utilization has helped more patients receive recommended diagnostics, treatments and follow-up care.
Course offers continuing education credit
Trupanion Certification is available at no cost to veterinary professionals throughout North America and can be completed on demand. Participants who successfully complete the program can earn 0.5 RACE continuing education credits.
