Wolters Kluwer Health has introduced Medi-Span Vet Meds, an embedded veterinary drug data and medication screening solution designed to support pharmacies as they expand into dispensing prescriptions for pets.
The platform is intended for U.S. retail pharmacies, pharmacy partners and veterinary medication fulfillment organizations. It provides animal-specific medication information and screening capabilities that can be incorporated into existing dispensing workflows.
Wolters Kluwer said the product is designed to address a technology gap created as more veterinary prescriptions move through retail pharmacies, fulfillment providers and digital pet medication channels.
Bringing veterinary screening into pharmacy workflows
Many pharmacy dispensing systems were developed primarily for human medications. According to Wolters Kluwer, pharmacists handling veterinary prescriptions may consequently need to consult manual references or use screening tools developed for human patients.
Medi-Span Vet Meds uses structured, machine-readable veterinary drug information and species-specific screening rules intended to account for differences among animals in dosing ranges, toxicities, contraindications and drug interactions.
The company said integrating this information into pharmacy technology can provide more consistent medication screening without requiring pharmacists to leave their normal dispensing workflows.

Sullivan said Medi-Span Vet Meds extends that medication intelligence into veterinary care with information developed specifically for veterinary prescribing and dispensing.
Survey points to consumer demand
Wolters Kluwer also released survey findings indicating pet owners may be interested in obtaining veterinary medications through the pharmacies they already use.
Among pet owners surveyed, 75% said they would like to fill pet prescriptions through the same channels they use for family medications. Eighty percent said having pharmacists equipped with pet-specific medication safety information is important.
The survey was conducted by Wolters Kluwer in July 2026 among 2,000 U.S. adults age 18 and older, including 1,336 pet owners. The overall sample was weighted by age, gender, household income, region and education to represent the U.S. population based on U.S. Census Bureau data.
The findings come as pharmacies and other medication fulfillment providers look to veterinary prescriptions as a potential area for expansion while pet owners increasingly seek convenient options for obtaining medications.
Expanding Medi-Span into animal health
Wolters Kluwer’s Medi-Span drug databases and APIs have been used in human healthcare for more than 50 years to support medication-related decision-making and pharmacy technology.
With Medi-Span Vet Meds, the company is extending the platform into veterinary medication dispensing using animal-specific clinical data and screening rules.
The company said the veterinary solution is supported by the same clinical data stewardship processes used across Medi-Span and is designed to provide repeatable screening for enterprise-scale dispensing environments.
