CVS Health® has expanded its pharmacy services to include prescription medications for dogs and cats, allowing pet owners to fill common veterinary prescriptions at CVS Pharmacy® locations nationwide.
The new offering provides access to select pet-only medications, including antibiotics, allergy medications, flea and tick treatments, insulin, and pain relievers. According to the company, the expansion is intended to improve convenience and reduce delays in obtaining medications prescribed by veterinarians.
Pharmacy services extended to pets
Pet prescriptions filled through CVS Pharmacy® are eligible for many of the same services available for human prescriptions, including automatic refills and prescription synchronization. Select medications may also qualify for home delivery, depending on availability.
To fill a prescription, pet owners can present a written prescription at a CVS Pharmacy® location or have their veterinarian send the prescription directly to the pharmacy.
CVS also allows customers to add pets to their CVS.com account and manage eligible prescriptions through the CVS Health app. The company said electronic prescribing capabilities for veterinary clinics are expected to be introduced in the coming months.
Expanded pet care offerings
In addition to prescription medications, CVS Pharmacy® stores and CVS.com offer a growing assortment of pet care products, including food, grooming supplies, flea and tick products, dental treats, toys, cat litter, and training supplies.
The retailer said its private-label Pet Central brand continues to expand with products for dogs and cats, while additional national pet care brands have recently been added to store shelves.
