The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine has announced Emily Ward Bivens as its 2026 Artist-in-Residence. Bivens, a visual artist, educator and distinguished professor of humanities and director of graduate studies in the School of Art at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will complete a four-week residency from July 13 through Aug. 7.
During her residency, Bivens will collaborate with members of the LSU Vet Med community while creating sketches, drawings and paintings inspired by the intersection of art and science. One work created during the residency will be donated to the school’s permanent collection, and the program will conclude with a public exhibition in the LSU Vet Med Library.
“I found the residency at LSU Vet Med while searching for opportunities to engage more deeply with animals from both a historical and biological perspective,” Bivens said. “I am thrilled with this opportunity because it is interdisciplinary by nature and design.”
Launched in 2022, LSU Vet Med’s Artist-in-Residence Program is the first of its kind at a U.S. veterinary school. The initiative invites artists from a variety of disciplines to explore connections between veterinary medicine, science and the arts. Previous residents have included visual artists, a composer, and a poet.
