PetSmart Charities is advancing a nationwide effort to improve access to veterinary care, reporting progress on its five-year, $100 million commitment to address barriers facing pet families across the United States.
Since launching the initiative in 2023, the organization has deployed $61 million across a coordinated strategy focused on expanding affordable care delivery, supporting research and innovation, and strengthening veterinary education and training.
Expanding access through community clinics
A central component of the initiative is the Accelerator Grant program, which provides multi-year funding to nonprofit, low-cost veterinary clinics. To date, 51 clinics have received support to expand services, increase capacity, and reach more underserved communities.
These investments have helped deliver care to more than 819,000 pets at reduced costs, demonstrating the potential of scalable, community-based care models.
Addressing affordability challenges
Research conducted in partnership with Gallup highlights the scale of financial barriers in veterinary care. According to the findings, 94% of veterinarians report that client financial constraints sometimes or often limit their ability to provide recommended care.
In response, PetSmart Charities is exploring solutions such as payment plan pilots designed to reduce cost barriers at the point of care for pet owners.
Investing in the veterinary workforce
The organization is also launching a Community Medicine Fellowship Program in collaboration with veterinary universities to better prepare graduates for working in access-to-care settings.
The program addresses gaps in veterinary education, particularly around discussing financial limitations with clients, and aims to equip future veterinarians with the skills needed to serve diverse communities.
