Revival Animal Health Recalls Canine Milk Replacers Over Vitamin D Imbalance

Revival Animal Health has issued a voluntary recall of multiple canine milk replacer products due to inconsistent vitamin D levels that may pose health risks to dogs.
  • Recall affects Breeder’s Edge and Shelter’s Choice canine milk replacers
  • Products may contain both deficient and excessive levels of vitamin D
  • Elevated vitamin D can cause serious health issues, including kidney dysfunction
  • Two cases of rickets reported in connection with affected products
  • Products were sold nationwide through retail and online channels

Revival Animal Health has initiated a voluntary recall of several canine milk replacer products under its Breeder’s Edge® and Shelter’s Choice® brands due to variable levels of vitamin D, which may result in both deficiencies and toxicities in dogs.

The company reported that some products contain elevated levels of vitamin D, which can lead to clinical signs such as vomiting, decreased appetite, increased thirst and urination, drooling, and weight loss. In severe cases, excessive vitamin D intake may result in renal dysfunction and other serious health complications.

Nationwide distribution and affected products

The recalled products were distributed across the United States through both online retailers and brick-and-mortar pet stores. They are sold in a range of formats, including resealable bags and 12-ounce jars, with multiple lot numbers and expiration dates impacted.

Pet owners are advised to stop using the affected products immediately and monitor their animals for any symptoms associated with vitamin D imbalance.

Reported cases and investigation

According to the company, two complaints of rickets have been reported to date, prompting further investigation. The recall was initiated after identifying inconsistencies in vitamin D levels across certain production batches.

The issue involves both insufficient and excessive vitamin D concentrations, which can disrupt normal bone development and metabolic function in puppies.

Guidance for veterinarians and pet owners

Consumers whose dogs have consumed the affected products and are showing clinical signs should contact their veterinarian promptly. Revival Animal Health is offering refunds for returned products and has provided a customer support line for additional inquiries.

The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
