Nestlé Purina PetCare has donated 45,000 pounds of dog food to support pets and their owners in rural Western Alaska communities still recovering from Typhoon Halong.
The storm struck Alaska in October 2025, bringing hurricane‑force winds and widespread flooding that affected nearly 50 rural and Alaska Native communities. In many of these regions, dogs play an essential role in daily life, providing transportation, protection, and companionship. Access to nutritionally dense pet food can remain limited for months following major disasters.
Purina learned about the ongoing need through Dr. Arleigh Reynolds, a veterinarian and medical advisor working with Alaska Native Rural Veterinary, Inc., an organization focused on improving animal health in remote Alaska communities.
To support recovery efforts, Purina produced and donated a full truckload of dog food and partnered with Greater Good Charities to coordinate transportation from the company’s manufacturing facility in Eden, North Carolina to Tacoma, Washington. An emergency grant from the Purina Foundation covered more than $6,000 in shipping costs needed to move the donation across the country.
Coordinated Logistics Across Remote Regions
Once in Alaska, Alaska Native Rural Veterinary, Inc. began working with a network of transportation partners to deliver the dog food directly to pet owners in remote communities. These partners include TOTE Maritime, Carlile Transportation, Alaska Air Transit, Resolve Aviation, Aleutian Airways, NAC Alaska, Ryan Air, Warbelows Air Ventures, and Everts Air.
Many of the affected communities are accessible only by air or sea, making coordinated logistics essential for delivering supplies.
Purina says supporting communities during and after disasters is a key part of its mission to help keep pets and people together. Through partnerships with organizations such as Greater Good Charities, the company provides emergency pet food donations, financial support, and logistical assistance to help families continue caring for their animals during recovery.
Over the past five years, Purina has contributed more than $150 million to organizations focused on keeping pets and people together and supporting community resilience.
