Study Links Chronic GI Disease to Anxiety and Behavioral Changes in Dogs

A new study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) highlights a strong association between chronic gastrointestinal disease and emotional distress in dogs, adding to growing evidence of a gut–brain connection in veterinary medicine.

Researchers found that dogs diagnosed with chronic enteropathy (CE)—a condition characterized by persistent or recurring gastrointestinal signs such as diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, and reduced appetite—were significantly more likely to exhibit behaviors associated with anxiety and stress.

Behavioral Signals of Emotional Distress

The study evaluated 50 dogs with CE alongside 50 healthy controls and found that affected dogs were more than three times as likely to display “displacement behaviors” across multiple scenarios. These behaviors included excessive licking, heightened sensitivity to noise, separation-related distress, and seemingly unexplained actions such as shaking off when not wet.

Dogs with CE were also three times more likely to show signs of distress when their owners prepared to leave the home, suggesting a meaningful impact on emotional regulation.

Evidence of a Gut–Brain Connection

The findings align with similar research in human and rodent models, where gastrointestinal disorders have been linked to mental health challenges. The authors noted that even dogs with relatively mild clinical disease showed measurable differences in emotional health compared to healthy counterparts.

The study addresses a gap in veterinary research, as emotional wellbeing in dogs with chronic GI disease has historically been underexplored.

Implications for Patient Care and Welfare

The behavioral effects of CE have important welfare implications. Undesirable behaviors—particularly those linked to anxiety—can strain the human–animal bond and, in some cases, contribute to decisions around relinquishment or euthanasia.

While many cases of CE can be managed through diet, medications, or immunosuppressive therapies, a subset of dogs do not respond to treatment, increasing the complexity of care.

Call for Further Research

The authors emphasize the need for additional studies to better understand whether gastrointestinal disease directly causes emotional changes, or if the relationship is more complex and bidirectional.

The findings highlight the importance of considering both physical and emotional health in managing chronic disease in dogs, reinforcing a more holistic approach to veterinary care.
