The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) has selected Emma Read, DVM, DACVS, of The Ohio State University as its next Chief Executive Officer, effective February 1, 2026.

Read currently serves as Associate Dean for Professional Programs and holds the Ruth Stanton Chair in Veterinary Medicine at OSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

“I’m honored to help lead AAVMC and work with college leaders to advance excellence in veterinary education,” said Dr. Read. “Together, we’ll continue to shape the future of the profession and empower the next generation of veterinarians.”

As CEO, Dr. Read will focus on competency-based education, workforce development, and strengthening academic partnerships across AAVMC’s global member institutions.

“Dr. Read brings visionary leadership and deep expertise in veterinary education,” said Dr. Bonnie Rush, AAVMC President and Dean of the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. “We’re confident she will expand AAVMC’s impact globally.”

Dr. Read’s appointment comes after an extended leadership transition at AAVMC.

Dr. Stuart Reid, who was previously named as AAVMC’s next CEO in October 2024, was slated to begin on August 1, 2025, following the departure of Dr. Andrew Maccabe, who served for 12 years. However, in May 2025, the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in London announced that Dr. Reid would remain its President and Principal for another three years, citing “the complex and evolving challenges currently facing veterinary education and the wider higher education sector.”
