Cornell University has named Susan Ruland as the next director of the Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA), following her service as interim director since March 2025.
Ruland previously served as director of finance and operations at the hospital after joining Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2019. During her tenure, she has overseen hospital financial management, operational strategy, and clinical service administration.
University leadership said Ruland’s experience across hospital operations and veterinary management positioned her to lead the hospital as it continues to expand services and training programs.
Leadership and Professional Development
During her time with CUHA, Ruland helped guide the hospital through operational changes following the COVID‑19 pandemic. She also oversaw the creation of a licensed veterinary technician internship program that evolved into a broader professional development pathway for veterinary technicians.
The Cornell University Hospital for Animals serves both as a referral hospital and a clinical training center for veterinary students, interns, and residents.
Ruland said the hospital’s ability to combine advanced clinical care with education is one of its greatest strengths.
Experience in Veterinary Operations
Before joining Cornell, Ruland held leadership roles in the private sector, including positions with Frito‑Lay and transportation company Zephyr Express. She later transitioned into veterinary healthcare management as director of hospital operations for SAGE Veterinary Centers, a multi‑state veterinary specialty network.
She earned dual bachelor’s degrees in language arts and business administration from the University of Connecticut and an MBA from the University of San Francisco.
In 2024, Ruland received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.
Hospital Growth and Regional Role
The Cornell University Hospital for Animals operates primarily in Ithaca, New York, and also includes Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists in Elmont. The hospital maintains strong relationships with Cornell University Veterinary Specialists in Stamford, Connecticut.
The hospital recorded more than 39,000 annual cases in 2025, the highest caseload in its history.
Ruland will work with associate hospital directors and department leadership to continue expanding access to veterinary care and training while managing financial pressures affecting veterinary medicine.
