Patrick Bell has been named director of pet placement initiatives at PetSmart Charities, where he will help advance the organization’s mission of strengthening the bond between pets and families.
Bell brings nearly two decades of PetSmart multi-unit retail leadership experience to the nonprofit. In his new role, he will lead strategies to expand PetSmart’s in-store adoption programs, strengthen collaboration between corporate, field and store teams, and deepen engagement with local animal welfare organizations.
Leadership Focus on Adoption Programs
According to PetSmart Charities president Aimee Gilbreath, Bell’s operational expertise and leadership style will help expand the organization’s ability to connect adoptable pets with families.
“Patrick brings both operational expertise and genuine passion for this mission,” Gilbreath said. “His people-first leadership style and commitment to building high-performing teams will be instrumental in deepening the connection between our stores, field leaders and partners — helping even more adoptable pets find homes.”
Experience in Animal Welfare and Community Engagement
Bell’s animal welfare experience includes collaborating with local shelter leadership and supporting in-store adoption initiatives. As a board member for a local nonprofit animal welfare organization, he advocated for lower-barrier adoption practices, strengthened collaboration among local shelters, and helped develop community-centered events designed to increase awareness and store engagement.
Bell also pursued extensive academic study while building his career at PetSmart. Through the company’s tuition reimbursement program, he earned a bachelor’s degree, dual master’s degrees and a doctorate.
He completed a doctorate in business administration with a concentration in organizational leadership and development, focusing on corporate social responsibility in the pet industry.
“I fully believe when teams feel connected to purpose, everyone wins—pets, people, partners, and the communities PetSmart serves,” Bell said. “My rescue cats are a daily reminder of why adoption programs matter so much, and I’m honored to help more pets find loving homes and support animal welfare partners working on the front lines.”
